What is Jolt Finder?

Jolt Finder is a community built database project. It is collection of locations that sell Jolt Cola, our very favorite beverage, built buy the users of this website. Once registered as a Jolt Finder, one can enter Locations that sell Jolt Cola products into the database. Anyone can search the database to find where Jolt is sold in thier city.

Who Needs Jolt Finder?

Lets face it, Jolt Cola isn't the easiest product to find. The Jolt Cola website does has a Product Locator, but it will only give you the contact information for distributors in your state. It is up to you to then contact the distributor yourself, and figure out with them where Jolt is sold closest to your house (or job, or social club, or whatever). This can have mixed results.

I called my local distributor, and the conversation went something like this:

ME: Hi can you tell me where I can find Jolt Cola closest to my house?
THEM: Well where do you live?
ME: I tell her.
THEM: Oh well, I'm not sure. Its not really a big mover you know.
ME: Well how about [A Location I already knew sold Jolt]
THEM:Yeah, I think we sell it there. Oh, we also sell it at [Another location that I didn't know sold Jolt but is tad bit further from home than the first location]
ME:Well how about [Some other location that I had not checked out yet]
THEM:Oh, I don't know if he carries that or not. I bet if you ask him, he might carry it for you.

I did not have much luck, but maybe your luck will be better. But then again with Jolt Finder, you don't need luck!

Why Make A Jolt Finder?

I first had the idea way back in 1995, when I found myself in a situation where I could not find any Jolt Cola anywhere. Ofcourse, at the time I was living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and there wasn't any Jolt Cola to be found in the entire country... perhaps the entire continent. At the time, I wrote a web page about it.

The idea for a website that would allow people from all over the world report locations where Jolt Cola is being sold sat in the back of my mind since then. I thought about the application from time to time, but just thinking about actually coding the thing would make my head spin. Then I discovered php and MySQL.

How to make a Jolt Finder?

My best friend after months of pestering, finally bullied me into learning to program in php, utilizing a MySQL database. Three days later, I had finished my first php script, The Fairy Tale Generator.

Thrilled with the success of my first script, and getting an inkling as to the inherant power of a MySQL backend with an easy to code php front end, I thought the time for my Jolt Finder had come. I started work on my second php project immediatly, and this is the fruit of my labors. Way way harder to code than the Fairy Tale Generator, but well worth it (I hope).
